Trekking Clothing and Equipment
What you wear and carry during a trek is very important, especially when you are trekking in the mountains of Nepal. The weather can change quickly as you gain altitude. You may start your day in warm weather and reach a much colder place after a few hours of walking.
Most of the trekking routes in Nepal are in remote and high-altitude areas, so it is better to be prepared for different weather conditions. Dressing in layers is the easiest way to manage the changing temperature.
Most trekking clothes and equipment are easily available in Kathmandu and Pokhara. You can buy or rent many of the things you need before starting your trek.
Clothing for Trekking
Base Layer:
A comfortable base layer helps keep your body dry when you are walking and sweating. Lightweight thermal or moisture-wicking clothes are a good choice.
Insulating Layer:
A fleece jacket or down jacket helps keep you warm at higher elevations and during cold mornings and evenings. A warm down jacket is especially useful for high-altitude trekking.
Outer Layer:
A waterproof and windproof jacket is important for protection from rain, snow and strong mountain winds. We recommend carrying a good-quality rain jacket or shell jacket.
Trekking Pants:
Lightweight and comfortable trekking pants are suitable for most trekking routes. Quick-drying pants are better because they are easy to wash and dry. Convertible pants can also be useful in changing temperatures.
Hiking Boots:
Good trekking boots should be comfortable, provide proper ankle support and have a good grip. Make sure you wear your boots several times before the trek so that they are comfortable and do not cause blisters.
Socks:
Wool or synthetic trekking socks are recommended. They keep your feet warm and help reduce moisture and blisters. Carry a few extra pairs for longer treks.
Hat and Gloves:
A warm hat and gloves are important at higher elevations. A sun hat or cap is also useful at lower elevations where the sun can be strong.
Sunglasses and Sunscreen:
Good sunglasses and sunscreen are important, especially at high altitude. UV exposure is stronger in the mountains, even when the weather feels cool.
Trekking Equipment
Backpack:
A comfortable backpack with a good hip belt is useful for carrying your daily essentials. If you are using a porter, you normally do not need to carry all your trekking equipment in your daypack.
Water Bottle:
Staying hydrated is very important while trekking. Carry a reusable water bottle or hydration bladder. Depending on the route, water purification tablets or a water filter can also be useful.
Trekking Poles:
Trekking poles provide extra support on steep and uneven trails. They are especially helpful during long downhill sections and can reduce pressure on your knees.
Navigation:
Popular trekking routes are generally easy to follow, but it is still a good idea to carry a trekking map or use an offline GPS or navigation app.
Headlamp:
A headlamp is very useful for early morning starts, walking around the tea houses at night, camping trips and peak climbing. Always carry spare batteries.
First Aid Kit:
Carry some basic first-aid supplies such as bandages, blister treatment, antiseptic, pain-relief medicine and any personal medicines you normally use.
Emergency Items:
An emergency blanket or lightweight emergency shelter can be useful in case of unexpected weather or other situations, especially on remote trekking routes.
Check the Weather Before Your Trek
Before starting your trek, check the weather forecast and the current trail conditions. Mountain weather can change very quickly, so you should always be prepared for unexpected rain, snow, wind or cold temperatures.
The equipment you need also depends on the trek. A short trek at lower altitude requires much less equipment than a high-altitude trek involving mountain passes or peak climbing.
Buying or Renting Trekking Equipment in Nepal
Trekking equipment is easily available in Kathmandu and Pokhara. There are many shops selling and renting trekking clothes and equipment.
If you do not want to buy everything, you can rent items such as sleeping bags, down jackets, trekking poles, backpacks and other trekking equipment for the duration of your trek. Rental prices are generally reasonable.
